PRP THERAPY

Platelet activation plays a key role in the process of wound and soft tissue healing. The use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), from a portion of a patient’s own blood, is a powerful and safe way to promote healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints, and can be applied to various musculoskeletal problems. PRP therapy uses your own body’s signals in order to begin the healing process.

WHAT IS PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma, commonly referred to as “PRP”, is your own blood collected via phlebotomy (blood draw) that is spun down using a special centrifuge to separate the blood cells from the plasma.
This procedure produces a higher than normal concentration of platelets, (growth factors and cytokines) which are the clotting cells of the body. They have great potential in enhancing healing of muscle, tendon, and ligaments. Studies suggest that growth factors released by platelets recruit reparative cells, augment tissue repair, and accelerate soft tissue healing.

PRP has been used in surgery to augment and repair rotator cuff tears of the shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, hip/knee/ankle damage, plantar fasciitis repair, and facet joints dysfunction, among other things. PRP has also shown great promise when injected into chronically injured tendons/ligaments where proper healing has not taken place. PRP has been very successful when other traditional treatments have failed.
